Prize Recruit: Dana Baker (Duke)

A few weeks before her best moment of the season—winning the javelin bronze at the World Juniors—Dana Baker (North, Olathe, Kansas) endured her roughest competition. “The one where I was most let down by myself,” as she introduces it, was the USATF Senior Championships. “I had been so consistent and that was the time for me to show the potential that I had to grow.” That meet came a week after she had won the national Junior title with a PR 178-1 (54.28) that moved her to No. 6 on the all-time HS list.
However, in Des Moines, she threw only 160-11 (49.05) and failed to make the final. “I just didn’t feel like I showed what I had,” she says. “It was a very humbling experience. I was kind of terrified and I never got my confidence back. I just couldn’t relax and got in my head too much.” Yet she adds, “It was essential for me to go through that to do better on a bigger stage. But in the moment, I didn’t really enjoy it.”
But the very next week, at East Stroudsburg’s Javfest in Pennsylvania, she launched a PR 180-9 (55.11) to climb to No. 3 all-time among U.S. preps. The difference, she says, came in retooling her mental approach: “I just told myself that it wasn’t going to be the same. I wasn’t going to allow my nerves to overwhelm me again. It was a smaller stage so I could relax. I just focused on getting better and it was a good day to do that.”
Then came Finland: “That was definitely the high point. I got to represent the U.S. I got to meet so many great athletes.” She used the lessons that she had learned along the way, keeping her mental focus and taking the lead with a near PR 180-7 (55.04) in round 2, a mark that held up for the third podium position and rated as the No. 6 prep performance ever.
Not a bad senior year for a girl who grew up thinking she was a lousy thrower. “It’s funny because when I played softball, I was terrible at throwing. I could hit, but I wasn’t very good at throwing. It never crossed my mind that I could be a thrower.” By the time she made it to high school, Baker mainly played volleyball. “I didn’t want to be a single-sport athlete so I went out for the track team and tried javelin. I really didn’t even enjoy it at first. But as time went by, I started liking it, I did better my sophomore year and really got into it my junior year.”
That was the season she won her second State title. Later in the summer, fully committed to the event, she nailed a PR 169-2 (51.56). “I realized that I had more opportunity with the javelin than I would with volleyball.”
At the New Balance Nationals she met Duke throws coach B.J. Linnenbrink, who got her to take a look at the Durham campus. “I was instantly amazed by it,” she says. Now a proud Blue Devil, Baker is doing fall javelin training for the first time ever. “I have that constant coaching and can see the progression a lot easier,” she explains. “I need a lot of technical work and I’d like to continue to make strides in that direction.”
